What is the correct grip?
The correct answer is: whatever works for you.
A more technically correct answer is: The grip that enables you to face the club in the direction you are swinging it, at impact, at speed, repetitively. Good golfers with bad grips and bad golfers with good grips are all but non-existent. You develop your ideal grip by trial and error based on proven principles. Try a Preformed Practice Grip.
- From Bob Toski's Books and Video
Accept this concept:
A contrived setup produces a natural swing and a natural setup produces a contrived swing.
"Unfortunately, what feels natural and comfortable to you may be wrong. So when you first get into the correct setup position, it will feel unnatural and uncomfortable. You may have to force some positions and exaggerate them for a while. Certainly you body position will be contrived or arranged."
-Bob Toski, How to Become a Complete Golfer
Size Doesn't Count
"You do not need great size or strength to generate speed in the golf swing. More than anything else, speed is created by proper technique, by putting your body and the club in the proper position to effectively use the strength you have. You don't have to hit the ball. The hit is simply the result of the ball getting in the way of the clubhead as it passes through the impact area. An on-center hit plus speed equals controlled distance."

Be Still? Don't Overdo It!
Thinking of keeping your head still can have a negative effect on your swing. We're not saying the head should move - at least not very much - but directing your attention to keeping it still can reduce the freedom of motion you need in your swing. Bob Toski
What About That Left Arm?
"... don't try to force your extension by keeping the left arm rigidly straight, because this creates tension that locks your swing. Don't be afraid to let the arm bend a little if it keeps you relaxed. As long as you don't overdo it, it will straighten naturally on the forward swing. You get a better sense of rhythm and a much more effective swing if you keep both arms "soft" going back and coming through. Bob Toski
Grip Pressure - Light is Right!
Almost every player below the level of professional or top amateur grips the club too tightly! A light grip frees your muscles to produce a relaxed but swift swing. The lighter your pressure on the club, the easier your arms swing, and thus the faster they swing. Bob Toski
Of Course It's Unnatural, It's Golf!
"You have to learn to do naturally - through muscle habits and training - what comes unnaturally, if you want to improve your skills. Acquiring awareness by working with the same concepts and developing a feel for when a movement is correct or incorrect is essential." BobToski More Golf Tips |
